Northeastern provinces show potential for investors
Phnom Penh: Tourism professionals are calling for more investment in building standard hotels and restaurants in Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri as the number of tourists in the two northeastern provinces increase yearly. Chairman of PATA Cambodia Chapter Mr. Thourn Sinan said that Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri are ideal for investing in luxury hotels, especially three-star to five-star hotels. “In these two provinces, tourists arrivals has risen yearly. Tourists are having hard time to find accommodations, while existing hotels have not yet complied with standards” he added. He said that Mondulkiri has nice view and covers of green forest, wildlife, cool climate, and small/large natural waterfall resorts, especially 70% ethnic minority lives there, which makes it more interesting for both national and international visitors. "These provinces are recognized as potential tourist destinations, but investment in hotel and real estate sector has not improved," he said. "It needs more development, such as meeting spaces, resorts, luxury hotels and major celebration sites," he continued. "Mostly we noticed 3-star hotels and small guesthouses, but every time when national festivals and big events are being held, there is a lack of rooms that cannot withstand the growth of tourists," he said. Director of Mondolkiri’s Tourism Department, Ngin Sovimean acknowledged the insufficiency of hotel and restaurant rooms and called for more investment from the private sector. As a surge in tourist arrivals every year, Mondulkiri built 8 hotels but most are 3-star hotels and 375 rooms. "To meet tourists’ demands, we need more than 2,000 rooms for the first step, so we require more investors in Mondulkiri. Government is focusing on the development of Mondulkiri as in 2018 there were over 215,300 visitors,” he said. H.E. Dr. Thong Khon, Minister of Tourism, said that Royal Government is studying the master plan of a small-scale airport in Mondulkiri to promote tourism and transport sector, especially transporting tourists to the province as well as transporting goods to Phnom Penh faster.
