The Shimao Wonderland Intercontinental hotel currently under construction is unique as the world’s first hotel located in a 90m deep, water-filled quarry. Built next to Tianma Mountain, in Dsongjian district of Shanghai, China and 50 kilometres from city center, the luxury hotel is designed by British architect Martin Jochman. Built directly on the site of an abandoned quarry it features some rooms underwater with a waterfall flowing over the façade and an incredible view from higher floors. There have been a few delays prior to 2014 but since 2015, the design optimisation and onsite construction progressed at a fairly swift pace and finally its owner has announced its official inauguration last year.  Currently, the main structure is almost completed and the fit-out work is underway. According to HOMECRUX, this five-star hotel is expected to open at the end of 2018. It has nineteen stories of which seventeen are below the ground level with two underwater floors, while the remaining two upper floors are above the quarry.  it will have around 380-400 rooms, large conference rooms, a ballroom, restaurants, swimming pool and a big swimming pool. There are two underwater floors, from which the lower floor offers water-sports facilities and houses a restaurant, facing an aquarium with a depth of ten metres. It is likely to also have prominent use of renewable energy in the design to make it an eco-friendly building.
